Photos showing the left and right waist of the "Wistful Vista" which took a direct flak hit in the ball turret. The mission was to Bernburg, Germany, on June 29, 1944. The ball turret gunner, Sgt. Julian Ludwick was killed instantly. The top of the tail turret was blown off by another flak burst. Sgt. Sydney Wallace, the radio operator, was seriously wounded in the head -- hit by a piece of the exploding ball turret. Although seriously damaged, no rudder control, leaking gas and loosing hydraulic pressure, the pilot was able to bring the plane home.
